Style and Character "copying"

Journal Entry: Sun Dec 18, 2011, 10:24 AM

srs bsn >:

It sadden me I have to make a journal about this.
I've been seeing people trying out stuff I do, and I'm cool with it. I feel honored people actually like my work enough to try these techniques themselves. I'm ok with the "copy to learn" thing. But it really bugs me when someone takes what you do, mimics it and claims it to be original...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to sound pretentious or pompous. But it took me 10 years to get where i am and it hurts me deeply to see "copycats" telling they "tried something new they felt in the morning" when they clearly took a pic as reference and don't bother telling it was the case.
The way I draw is myself, my personality, my dreams, my thoughts, ME. Trying to copy someone's style is like stealing their personality, the way they live, think and see the world. Everybody has their own eyes to see, so why stealing other people's eyes when you can use you own?

If it can help you find your own style, then ok, try. But please, don't try to say it's original because people don't know the original illustrators and you don't fear to be "the one that draw like XXXX"
You may think it's flattering for the illustrator to see their style copied, but it's not. It's hurting. To think they worked hard on their drawing to be original, to be something people will like to see, and then see their style copied... Trust me, it's not flattering.

The most UNflattering thing is: character copying.
And that's why i'm thinking about not posting anything original anymore. Because it's HURTING to see Sachi with different names (saw 5 "sachis" already). I'm taking his example because he is the most "stolen" around my gallery. I know he doesn't have pink birthmarks on his head, or hair with green streaks, or anything "original" on him, but yes, I can recognize him when someone else draw him. I saw an "OC" that was just him, with his school uniform (the same) BUT with a different name.

I know most people don't want to be comic drawers or illustrators and do this on their free time just for fun, but it doesn't make it right to take someone's character and make it your own just by changing the name and their personality (and sometimes, their name is not THAT different and their personality is the same...). It just make me think of a bootleg version of the character...

My characters are my life. I will write and draw their life with mine. Seeing "them" as "this is my OC! xxxxx Don't steal him! copyright: me!" ... please understand it HURTS really badly.
If you like your characters as much as I do, then why steal them to me in the first place? I don't understand. You don't want to see them copied and yet, they are copies of mine.

I'm sorry if I sound pretentious, but it's something that matters to me.

Please respect my work and my characters. They are not yours. Thank you.

(I wont say any names or link to any galleries, i'll be my own white knight, it is for me to handle c: )

sorry for the long rant, but it was necessary to clear this point.

Aww, I'm sorry to hear that, Senri.

I don't think art-thieving will ever stop, unfortunately. But I hope you'll feel better soon.

I don't want to be mean, but I just stumbled upon this and looked at your character Sachi.. You say people take him but just change his clothes and personality. so...every thin anime boy character with short black hair is automatically yours? That sounds like 25% of all anime characters that have already been made. I'm sorry, but unless there's something really remarkable about him , I just don't understand what you mean by people stealing his design :O thenagain, like I said, i just stumbled across this randomly , so I might be missing something obvious and I apologize

No worries, you're not being mean or anything, i understand your point of view XD;
I know Sachi is not THAT original. I hate to add features to a chara to make them original (like tatoos everywhere, star eyes, pink hair with blue streaks, you know what i mean XD;; I don't want them to become sparkle dogs).
It's normal for you to come and say "well, yeah, he is not THAT original", i understand. Because i didnt link to the "OCs" i've seen. What i'm talking about here is carbon copies of him (again, taking his example because i've seen them several times now). Wearing the same clothes, with the same clothes patterns, same shoes, same hairstyle, same hair colors, with the same way of drawing eyes, hair, same way of coloring, etc...

That's whats bugging me, it's twin brothers with different names :/

And don't apologize for having an opinion ;u; <3

Certainly been copied is an example of a wicked admiration, it doesn't mean is nice or great but at least you inspired some people in some way other than the traditional. Nevertheless originality sometimes is a mix of our experiences so sometimes a coincidence can happen, sometimes of course. See ya!

It's a shame, but these things happened, happen and will continue to happen, I just can advise you to be strong.

Don't give up ♥

sorry for non french speaking people, I'm really to tired to write this comment in english...

*huuuuug*

I thought would just DIE if someone tried to copy my characters (from my books, not on dA), but then when a friend did just that (she said she was going to and I said it was ok) she totally butchered 'my' character and I could hardly recognize them o___o Basically, I learned that no one CAN use my characters but me, because only I truly know them. Maybe to someone else, the two characters, mine and 'hers' would seem the same, but to me, they had nothing in common other than superficial characteristics. Thankfully because of that experience, I no longer worry about people copying me or my characters. It simply can't be done! XD

XD

you've spoken for me..I want to promote my own originality but I'm afraid of such things happening so that's why I keep drawing fanart (but it's tedious..)
